Waterproof school bags: how to pick one that lasts the year

Waterproof or just water-resistant?

Plenty of children's school bags are described as waterproof when they are really water-resistant. Water-resistant usually means a coated fabric, stitched seams and a zip. It sheds a light shower, but water finds its way in through every needle hole, along the zip and through fabric that has soaked through on a long walk.

A waterproof bag is built differently: a fabric that water cannot pass through, seams that are welded or taped rather than just stitched, and a closure that seals instead of a zip. If any one of those three is missing, the books inside are relying on luck.

How to spot a bag that is only water-resistant

Read the listing closely before you buy. These are the signs a bag will keep out a drizzle but not a proper downpour:

• Stitched seams with no mention of welding or seam taping.
• A zip across the top opening, especially without a storm flap.
• Words like showerproof, water-repellent or weather-resistant instead of waterproof.
• A separate rain cover, which means the bag itself is not waterproof.
• Only the lining described as waterproof, so the outer fabric soaks up water.
• No explanation of how the bag keeps water out.

What adult waterproof bags do differently

Outdoor and commuter brands solved this problem years ago, and their bags all share the same recipe. Sea to Summit's Big River dry bags use TPU-laminated nylon, seam-sealed construction and a roll-top closure, and the brand rates the fabric at a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head. Ortlieb's Velocity, a cycling and commuting daypack, uses PVC-coated polyester with a roll closure and is rated IP64, which means dust-tight and protected against splashing water from all directions.

Both brands are also honest about the limits: Ortlieb notes that a fully submerged bag can let water in through the closure, and Sea to Summit says its dry bags are not intended for prolonged submersion. Waterproof means rain, puddles and splashes, not swimming.

Built for children's backs

Most dry bags are made for adults and simply shrunk, or made for kayaks and not for backs at all. plop is designed around a child: padded, contoured shoulder straps, a padded back panel and a chest strap that stops the bag sliding off small shoulders.

At 32 by 25 by 13 cm and about 450 g, it is sized for ages 3 to 10 and light for its size, so most of what a child carries is their own things rather than the bag. It still takes A4 books flat.

Will A4 books actually fit?

This is the most common disappointment. Plenty of children's bags are sized for a lunch box and nothing else, so reading folders and A4 workbooks have to be bent to go in.

Check the internal width and height, not the litre figure. A bag around 32 cm high and 25 cm wide takes A4 flat with room to spare. Roughly 10 litres of usable space covers books, a lunch box, a spare set of clothes and a bottle.

Where school bags leak

Rain runs down the back panel and collects at the top opening, so a zip is usually the first failure. Stitched seams are the second, because every needle hole is a route in. A soft matte TPU fabric with welded seams and a roll-top closure removes both.

The base is the third. Bags stand in puddles and on wet floors all day, so a reinforced base is worth more than an extra pocket.

Water bottles: inside or outside?

An open external pocket keeps a leaking bottle away from books, which is exactly what you want on a school day. An internal holder keeps the bottle upright and stops it being pulled out on the walk home.

Having both is the useful combination: bottle outside on a normal day, inside when the pocket is already full or the bag is being thrown around.

Straps a child can manage alone
