Waterproof school bags: how to pick one that lasts the year
A school bag gets wet, dropped, sat on and left on a wet cloakroom floor five days a week. Nearly all of them are fine in September and sad by February.
Here is what to check before you buy, in the order it tends to go wrong.
Will A4 books actually fit?
This is the most common disappointment. Plenty of children's bags are sized for a lunch box and nothing else, so reading folders and A4 workbooks have to be bent to go in.
Check the internal width and height, not the litre figure. A bag around 32 cm high and 25 cm wide takes A4 flat with room to spare. Roughly 10 litres of usable space covers books, a lunch box, a spare set of clothes and a bottle.
Where school bags leak
Rain runs down the back panel and collects at the top opening, so a zip is usually the first failure. Stitched seams are the second, because every needle hole is a route in. A coated shell with welded seams and a roll-top closure removes both.
The base is the third. Bags stand in puddles and on wet floors all day, so a reinforced base is worth more than an extra pocket.
Water bottles: inside or outside?
An open external pocket keeps a leaking bottle away from books, which is exactly what you want on a school day. An internal holder keeps the bottle upright and stops it being pulled out on the walk home.
Having both is the useful combination: bottle outside on a normal day, inside when the pocket is already full or the bag is being thrown around.
Straps a child can manage alone
If your child cannot fasten the bag without help, you will be fastening it every morning. Padded adjustable shoulder straps spread the weight, and a chest strap stops the bag sliding off small shoulders. A roll top closes with a fold and a press, which a three-year-old can do unaided.
A carry handle and an internal name label are small things that matter in a cloakroom of thirty identical bags.
Built for years, not terms
Cheap bags are usually replaced annually, which costs more than one good bag. Coated waterproof fabric, welded seams, a reinforced base and hard-wearing fastenings are what make a bag survive several school years and still look presentable.
