Kids beach bags: keeping sand out and wet kit in
A good beach bag for a child is a small waterproof backpack around 10 litres with a roll top, so wet swimwear stays sealed in, sand brushes off the smooth surface, and they can carry it on their own.
Updated
Beach bags for children are usually mesh or canvas totes. Mesh lets sand through, canvas soaks up seawater, and neither is easy for a small child to carry.

Waterproof works both ways
A waterproof bag keeps dry clothes dry on the way down and keeps wet swimwear from soaking the car on the way back. A roll top seals both.
Sand and salt
Smooth, non-woven fabric does not trap sand. Rinse it with fresh water after a beach day, wipe it and let it air dry away from direct heat.
A backpack, not a tote
On soft sand children need their hands for spades, buckets and balance. A backpack with a chest strap keeps their hands free.
Common questions
- What should a child's beach bag be made of?
- A smooth waterproof fabric such as TPU, which sand brushes off and seawater cannot soak into.
- How do I clean sand out of a kids bag?
- Empty it, turn it upside down and shake, rinse with fresh water, then wipe and air dry away from heat.
