How to choose in five minutes

Work through these in order and the shortlist writes itself. Most bags fail at the first or second question.

Nothing here needs a review site. Every answer is on the product page, or conspicuously missing from it.

• Will A4 sit flat? You need at least about 31 cm of internal height and 23 cm of width.
• Where does water get in? A zip is a 40 cm long gap along the top of the bag.
• Are the seams sewn or welded? Stitching means needle holes in the wettest panel.
• Can the child open it alone? If you will be doing it at the cloakroom door every morning, it is the wrong bag.
• Does the base survive standing in a puddle? A reinforced base is worth more than another pocket.

Capacity by age, and why litres mislead

Two 10 litre bags can be shaped completely differently, and only one of them takes a reading folder flat. The Decathlon MH500 and plop are both 10 litres; plop is 25 cm wide and the MH500 is 21.5 cm, which is the difference between a folder lying flat and a folder going in at an angle.

Use the height and width first, and treat the litre figure as a rough volume check afterwards.

• Ages 1 to 3: about 2 litres. Snack, beaker, spare clothes.
• Ages 3 to 5: about 10 litres. Change of clothes, lunch, bottle, nursery folder.
• Ages 5 to 10: about 10 to 14 litres. Reading folder, A4 workbooks, lunch, bottle, PE kit on kit days.
• Ages 11 and up: 15 litres and above, because textbooks and a laptop change the maths entirely.

Water resistant and waterproof are not the same claim

A water-resistant bag holds off a shower. Rain then finds the zip, the stitching or the front pocket, and books come home damp. Waterproof describes the whole construction: the material itself, sealed seams, and an opening that closes without leaving a gap.

Read the wording on the page rather than the pictures around it. "Water repellent finish", "waterproof lining" and "showerproof" all describe part of a bag. If a bag comes with a rain cover, it is telling you where it leaks.

If a listing does not use the word waterproof anywhere, assume it is not.

Straps, fit and the chest strap nobody mentions

The bag should sit between the shoulders and the waist, never below the bottom, and it should be no wider than the child's shoulders. Padded adjustable straps keep it there as they grow.

A chest strap is the single most useful thing on a small child's bag: it stops the straps sliding off shoulders that have not broadened yet. plop, the LittleLife bags and the Decathlon MH500 have one. The Kånken Mini does not.

For a three-year-old, the clip matters as much as the strap. If they cannot close it themselves, they will carry the bag in one hand instead of wearing it.

What actually fails first

Bags rarely wear out through the fabric. They fail at the base, which greys and splits after a year of being dropped on tarmac, at the stitching where a strap meets the body, and at the zip, which either jams or parts under a full load.

That is the argument for welded seams and a reinforced base rather than for a brand name. It is also the argument for a roll top: there is no mechanism to break.

• Base: look for a reinforced or double-layer base panel.
• Strap anchors: reinforced or welded attachment points, not a single line of stitching.
• Closure: fewer moving parts last longer than better moving parts.
• Cleaning: a wipe-clean surface still looks new in year three; woven fabric holds dirt in the weave.

Cleaning, because it decides how long a bag looks new

Most children's bags are ruined by cleaning rather than by dirt. A hot machine wash strips coatings, stresses welded seams and warps padded panels, and no waterproof bag should ever go in one. Sticky Lemon says the same about its own bags: damp cloth only.

Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, a cloth, then air dry away from radiators. On a soft matte TPU fabric mud, poster paint and yoghurt sit on the surface and wipe straight off.

Every figure comes from the maker's own product page, not from retailer listings, review sites or press coverage. Where a maker does not publish a figure, the table says so rather than filling the gap.

What is the best size school bag for a primary school child?

Around 10 litres, roughly 32 cm high by 25 cm wide by 12 cm deep. That takes A4 books flat plus a lunch box, spare clothes and a bottle without being too wide for a small back.

Which kids school bags are actually waterproof?

Of the bags compared here, only plop publishes a fully waterproof construction: soft matte TPU fabric with welded seams and a roll top. Trunki's PaddlePak and Fjällräven's Kånken Mini are described as water resistant, Sticky Lemon states a waterproof lining, and the LittleLife and Decathlon bags make no waterproof claim.

Are roll-top bags practical for school?

Yes. A roll top closes with a fold and a press, adapts to how full the bag is, and removes the long opening that a zip leaves exposed to rain.

Is a Kånken Mini big enough for school?

Not for A4. Fjällräven publishes it as 7 litres at 29 by 20 by 13 cm, which is shorter than an A4 sheet, so folders and workbooks will not sit flat.

Is a cheap school bag a false economy?

It depends on the load. A £9.99 bag that is replaced every September costs more over five years than one bag with welded seams and a reinforced base. If the bag only carries a lunch box, the cheap one is the sensible buy.

What is the best school bag for a rainy country?

One with a waterproof material, sealed or welded seams, and a closure with no gap, which in practice means a roll top rather than a zip. Water resistance on its own is not enough for a daily walk to school in British weather.
